Port Elizabeth International Airport is an airport serving Port Elizabeth, a city in the Eastern Cape Province in South Africa. It was formerly known H.F. Verwoerd Airport. The airport is owned and operated by the Airports Company South Africa which also operates nine other airports around South Africa.
A bit of interesting history regarding the flights in Port Elizabeth, is that the airports first ever flight was made from Port Elizabeth to Cape Town in 1917. At the time, this flight was regarded as a long distance flight. The actual Port Elizabeth Airport was officially opened in 1936, boasting a single runway. However, during World War Two, the airfield was extended to accommodate 42 Air School for the Royal Air Force and 6 Squadron South African Air Force.
