Virgin Atlantic is a British airline with its head office based in Crawley in the United Kingdom. The airline was established in 1984 as British Atlantic Airways. The name of the airline was then later changed to Virgin Atlantic. It is an independent airline that operates flights from Johannesburg to Heathrow in London and flights from Johannesburg to New York. During the summer months, the airline also operates flights from Cape Town to Heathrow in London.

The checked baggage allowances as set out by Virgin Atlantic are as follows:

  • Economy Class – Passengers travelling to Heathrow Airport in London are allowed one piece of luggage that does not exceed the weight limit of 23kg
  • Economy Class – Passengers traveling to the USA are allowed two pieces of luggage that does not exceed the weight limit of 23kg each
  • Premium Economy Class – Passengers are allowed two pieces of luggage that does not exceed the weight limit of 23kg each
  • Upper Class – Passengers are allowed three pieces of luggage that does not exceed the weight limit of 32kg each
  • Infants – Passengers are allowed one piece of luggage that does not exceed the weight limit of 23kg in addition to a pushchair and car seat.

The hand luggage allowances are as follows:

  • Economy Class and Premium Economy Class – Passengers are allowed one piece of luggage that does not exceed the weight limit of 10kg
  • Upper Class – Passengers are allowed two pieces of luggage that does not exceed the weight limit of 12kg
  • Infants – Passengers are allowed one piece of luggage that does not exceed the weight limit of 10kg

Virgin Atlantic will transport most sport equipment at no extra cost, provided that it weighs less than 23kg
